CHAPTER

“You got a lot of experience building an insurgency,” Norman pulled up a chair and sat next to Archie.

The other men were camping close to the side of the house in a patch of dried grassy.

Reynosa had shifted a blanket each through the wall of sliders, then locked them out and set a pole behind the door so it wouldn’t move.

They could see them inside the house, shadows moving through flickering light, cast by candle stubs placed strategically in each room.

Archie had to admit, Jose had a nice set up.

Not just the wives thing, but from the street, the house looked empty, yet they had the back yard space hidden by a high fence. The pool was an additional water supply and he could see a greenhouse attached to the back of the left wing of the house and the start of another on the right.

It wouldn’t always be coyote for dinner.

“I don’t have much experience at it, no,” he said to Norman. “You?”

He couldn’t see him shrug in the dark, but he heard the shift of fabric on his shoulders and assumed that’s what it was.

“I’ve got a lot of light experience in a lot of things,” he confessed. “What you call insurgents, we called rebels and I trained both sides for it.”

“Then you know what kind of damage we can do,” said Archie.

“Not as much as we could do with a two ton nuke.”

Archie nodded, but the man couldn’t see it in the dark.

“Being caged up gives you a little perspective on freedom,” he said.

“I’ve been caged before,” Norman told him.

“Really?”

“Rebels or insurgents, there’s always a side that doesn’t like what you’re doing. When they catch you, they lock you up and do all manner of nasty things to you.”

“You think we should kill all these people who survived an alien invasion because you got held hostage by our enemy?”

“Do you know what happened when I go traded?” Norman’s voice took on a tone in the dark.

Archie didn’t recognize it, part sadness, part rage.

“Our country locked me up too. For a debrief.”

“How long?”

“Three months.”

“Three years,” said Archie. “For killing a man who deserved to be dead. Killing him was like killing Hitler. I saved countless soldier’s lives because he made too many dumb decisions that were going to get them killed.”

“There are no guilty men in prison. Ask Snow or Boyd or Toi and they’ll tell you they were justified too.”

“Then maybe we should give them the benefit of the doubt.”

“Maybe. Do you know what I did when they let me out and brought me back in? I moved from Operations to Analysis. Do you know what analysts do?”

“Assess.”

“Right. I assessed that the proxy war I got caught up in wouldn’t have any winners.”

“There never are.”

“Have you heard about Dresden in World War II?”

“Munitions plants. We bombed.”

“We did more than bomb them. US and British planes obliterated the town. We don’t know how many were killed. It stopped the war in Europe.”

“You think bombing the airport is going to stop the invasion?”

Norman sighed.
